Guild Member Steve Vasiliou

The guild salutes Steve Vasiliou for his unselfish efforts
to promote arts and crafts in West Virginia.

Steve Vasiliou is being honored at The 2001 Mountain State Art and Craft Fair by induction into the Fair Hall of Fame.   Steve was recognized for his contribution to the fair for the past 25 years and his help in nourishing and preserving West Virginia’s cultural heritage.

A MFA graduate of Ohio State University, he taught a variety of art courses and chaired the Dept. of Art at Wheeling College for 12 years.   He has been a full-time potter since 1986, exhibiting regionally and nationally.

Steve passed away in 2011.

His involvement with the fair began as a juror in 1976.   Steve became an exhibitor the next year and stayed to work at making the fair one of the best in the country.  He has served on the Board of Directors of the Fair since 1977, when he was appointed  to represent the WV Art and Craft Guild.  He later serves as a representative for the WV Dept. of Commerce.

  Vasiliou says,

“From the time I first saw the Mountain State Art and Craft Fair as a juror, it was love at first sight.  I knew I wanted to be a part of it both as an exhibitor and as a director.  It has changed and enriched both my professional and my personal life enormously through sweltering heat, cloudbursts, floods, gale-like winds, recessions, energy shortages and economic booms.”

He has chaired many of the fair’s special committees, been president of its directors for a three-year term and started the successful Fair Scholarship and Grant Fund.

Most will be familiar with his pottery, which is beautifully crafted and easily recognizable for the original and whimsical designs which often feature bluebirds, raccoons and leaves and berries, yet serve as functional wares.  His ceramics and paintings have won numerous merit and best of show awards, both locally and nationally.

This life-long Wheeling resident has been actively involved with Olgebay Institute and The Wheeling Artisan Center.   Steve has been an integral part of the West Virginia Art and Craft Guild during the past 25 years serving as Chairman of the Guild Competition and a member of the board of directors.   The guild salutes Steve Vasiliou for his unselfish efforts to promote arts and crafts in West Virginia.  Steve with be sorely missed.
